Whether it is the latest news on a smartphone, flexible subscription models or clearly structured media libraries: customers expect fast, uncomplicated access to high-quality content. The media company Axel Springer, which worked with dotSource to make its online shop for subscriptions fit for the future, shows how digital media consumption can be understood as an opportunity for successful new business models. There is hardly any publishing house in Germany that is as well known as Axel Springer SE. The long-established media company is active in more than 40 countries these days. Of course, it is no longer just about printed newspapers – the company generates more than 70 per cent of its consolidated annual revenues with digital activities. Migration to Adobe Commerce: The Online Shop for Digital Newspapers A key component of Axel Springer’s digital portfolio is Lesershop24, the official online shop for newspaper and magazine subscriptions. Magento 2 Enterprise, the e-commerce system used for this online shop, was approaching its end of support, so an alternative had to be found to reduce the risk of future security vulnerabilities. Axel Springer opted for a system migration from Magento Enterprise 2.0.18 to the successor product Adobe Commerce 2.3.3 (formerly known as Magento 2 Commerce). By doing so, the media company wanted to ensure the future updateability of its online shop for subscriptions and benefit from the development capabilities of Adobe Commerce. Migration to Adobe Commerce: Upgrade Leap Thanks to Proof of Concept A system migration is a complex process with many individual steps. That is why dotSource adopted an agile approach, combined with the proof of concept (POC) method, to create a strategic roadmap for the migration. With the interim results, it was possible to identify potential problems at an early stage, making the upgrade leap manageable through individual work packages. The hosting of the subscription portal was optimised as well because the server architecture of Magento 2 Enterprise had not been compatible with the new Adobe Commerce platform. This way, Axel Springer is able to make full use of the potential of its online shop migrated to Adobe Commerce. Migration to Adobe Commerce: E-Commerce System Thanks to the migration of Lesershop24, Axel Springer benefits from a fast, flexible and – most importantly – future-proof shop solution for its digital offerings.
